Lyneham High School band from the ACT performed recently at the museum.

Lyneham High School performs outside the museum on 22 September 2009.

The museum loves music and encourages school bands to perform on its forecourt. So far we’ve had school bands from South Australia, Coffs Harbour and recently Lyneham High School from the ACT. We’d love to hear your school band perform. It’s a great way to get performance experience and show Sydney what your school band is made of.

If you’d like your school band to play at the museum, please contact us at events@anmm.gov.au

On public display for the first time in over 20 years the celebrated Charlotte Medal is one of the few objects still in existence from the voyage of First Fleet. Convict Thomas Barrett engraved the 74 mm silver Charlotte Medal on board the transport ship Charlotte when it was anchored in Botany Bay in January 1788. Along with the rest of the fleet Charlotte was awaiting Governor Phillip’s decision to sail north to strike the first European settlement at Port Jackson.

This new exhibit tells the story of two Japanese women – Teruko Blair and Sadako Morris – who met and fell in love with Australian soldiers during the Allied Occupation of Japan. They made Australian immigration history, being the first significant group of non-Europeans permitted to migrate to Australia in the early 1950s while the White Australia Policy was still in place.

Head of Conservation, Jonathan, and Anupa from Registration have just removed a 1780 Japanese woodblock and are replacing it with an eighteenth century French chart of the Indian Ocean. Museum staff regularly change objects in the galleries to keep displays ‘fresh’ and protect objects from being damaged by the lights. Visitors sometimes complain about low light levels in galleries but light damages all objects to some degree and generally speaking, the higher the light level – the greater the impact on the object.

HMAS Onlsow being towed passed the Sydney Opera House

... well we only have one, HMAS Onlsow. But still, yesterday she was moved, with help from the nice folks at the Defense Maritime Services, to Garden Island for a revamp. Here you can see her moving majestically past the Sydney Opera House.
